TBS iNsightTM – advanced imaging software for bone densitometry (DXA) – improves the prediction of osteoporotic fractures.

The result – expressed as the Trabecular Bone Score (TBS) – is based on a patented algorithm that evaluates spatial variations in grey levels in the DXA scan of the AP spine. TBS provides an indirect but highly correlated index of bone microarchitecture. TBS predicts fractures independently of bone mineral density (BMD), clinical risk factors and FRAX®.

TBS is most significant in patients with osteopenic/normal BMD values who have low TBS values and consequently have a higher risk of fracture, and in patients whose fracture risk is close to the intervention threshold. In addition, TBS shows potential in patients with secondary osteoporosis: while BMD is often only of limited use in identifying patients with secondary OP and diagnosing their increased risk of fractures, TBS appears to be helpful in detecting changes in trabecular bone microarchitecture and thus the increased fracture risk associated with these diseases.
